Amy’s journey
Amy’s route from hobbiest to professional was prompted primarily by other moms. They wanted those artistic, real life pictures of their kids at-play (or even pouting). . . like the pics Amy was taking of her daughters (Avery b. 1993, and Zoe b. 1999).
After their 3rd baby (a boy this time, Tycho b. 2000), Amy and husband, Paul were having that how-to-make-ends-meet discussion that so many young couples dread. “What if photography was a bigger piece of this?” Paul asked. “What about weddings?”
Sure, Amy had shot a few weddings over the years for friends and family, but truthfully, her images didn’t resemble what most people thought of as wedding photography. “I don’t know if the pictures I make is the kind of stuff people are looking for?” Amy confessed. And then Paul said the most supportive and appropriate thing he possibly could: “I think you should let the brides decide that.”
So Amy hosted a booth at a “wedding show” (Sept 2001) with lots of pictures of people she was related to . . . and sure enough, her work didn’t look a thing like any other photographer’s work there. Brides-to-be saw the black & whites, felt the emotion, were surprised by the spontaneous and loved the un-posed artistry. Within a month of that show, Amy had signed 15 weddings for the coming season.
You know that old advice, “do what you love . . .”
Ok, so maybe there’s some truth to that.
